Argument In Favor of Name Change

Our club’s beauty is in its diversity, equality and inclusivity—but our name, specifically “Wheelmen,” is exclusive, and is not representative of who we are today. Not all of our membership identifies as male. Several non-males, who happen to be our beloved friends, are genuinely hurt by the fact that our name excludes them. Further, even some men are disappointed that we have not updated the name to reflect our constituent membership and to make everyone feel welcome and supported.

If the argument against a name change is based in tradition, be mindful that old traditions can be exchanged for healthier choices. Traditionally women did not have the right to vote, slavery was legal, and men were not nurses. The current zeitgeist is one of reckoning. Sports teams and resorts formerly known as Indians, Redskins and Squaw Valley have successfully rebranded with new names. Stewardesses are now flight attendants, firemen are firefighters, policemen are police officers, and mailmen are mail carriers. These changes were made in response to revelations that the traditional names were offensive and hurtful. Indeed, multiple women have asked, when told about our club and its name, if women are allowed to join.

Petaluma Wheelmen Cycling Club has a rich history that will be preserved on our website after the name change, easily accessible by all. The founders will always be the founders, and a new name does not imply that history will be rewritten. There is nothing to lose by fairly and equally representing our friends and constituents. Keep in mind that NOT changing the name to something more inclusive is essentially a vote to deny a significant portion of our membership (real people, not anonymous statistics) the equal rights, representation, and common human decency that we all deserve.

Argument Opposed to Name Change

Opposition to removing “Wheelmen” from the name of our cycling club is based upon honoring and respect for those who historically rode before us. Jim Janakes who was buried in his full Wheelmen kit, and was the driving force behind the resurrection of the club felt strongly that Petaluma needed a cycling club and that it should engender the ethos of the “Wheelmen” who came before us. The ethos is non-binary and genderless, inclusive and supportive just the same as history proved it to be. Cycling is one of the historical inventions that changed the world. It gave women and children the means to gain freedom. It led to the automotive & aviation industries dominating our landscape. Therefore, cycling is a throwback endeavor; historically, socially and physically. Changing our club’s name dis-honors those who risked their lives and limbs to pedal us to this point in history. Cyclists, once known exclusively as “Wheelmen”, have always been risk takers, those of all genders who didn’t take the easy road. They rode into history against the prevailing thoughts and ideas of the time and continue to do so today. There are few things in history that so clearly benefited humanity with little negative impact. I submit that there are a lot of things wrong with our world, and much of that is down to male dominance. However, bicycles or ‘wheels” were one of the first inventions that truly diminished that male dominance. Should we not honor that history with our club’s name?
